Schumann Quartet

Biography

The Schumann Quartet —brothers Mark, Erik, and Ken Schumann with violist Veit Hertenstein— has earned international acclaim for its fearless spontaneity and emotional depth. Known for turning every performance into a living exploration, the ensemble collaborates with artists such as Andreas Ottensamer, Kit Armstrong, Sabine Meyer, and Lisa Batiashvili. Highlights of the 2025/26 season include appearances at the Musikverein Vienna, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, alongside their celebrated “Expedition Mozart” project. Acclaimed recordings such as Intermezzo (Opus Klassik Award 2019), Fragment (Schubert), and 1923 with Bayerischer Rundfunk showcase their adventurous spirit.

Mentored by Eberhard Feltz and the Alban Berg Quartet, they are praised for “fire and energy” and “staggering virtuosity” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). Their historic instruments—from Amati to Stradivari—mirror the quartet’s rare blend of heritage, honesty, and creative daring.
