Walter Levin

Biography

Born in Berlin, Walter Levin first studied music in Tel Aviv and from 1946-49 in New York at the Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian. During that period, he founded the LaSalle Quartet with whom he played first violin for over forty years touring worldwide and building up an extensive discography. From 1953 to 1989, Mr. Levin taught at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music where the LaSalle Quartet was in residence.
Walter Levin now works with young string quartets in Europe, gives lecture recitals and teaches chamber music and interpretation at the Music Academy Musikhochschule in Basel, for ProQuartet in Paris, and the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid.
Many of today’s quartets concertizing interna-tionally have studied with Walter Levin: Alban Berg, Vogler, Artis, Prazak, Artemis, Zemlinsky, Kuss, Casals and others.
